Auckland’s rail use just keeps on growing.

That’s what ARTA’s chairman, Rabin Rabindran (left) told the Onehunga train station opening.
ARTA has hailed its latest patronage figures as “extremely encouraging” following a record 60.8 million trips from August 2009 to July 2010 – the highest 12 month patronage figure since 1974.

Total patronage for the last 12 months to July 2010 is 60,802,730 - higher public transport usage than the carless days of 1979/80.
Rail patronage has doubled in 5 years.

Transport minister Steven Joyce is seen in this video clip in the front row of the gathering hearing the good news from the chairman about Aucklanders taking to rail.

The chair says the uptake of public transport in Auckland continues to soar and the trend of strong growth can be seen across the board.
These results consist of 47,711,026 total boardings on buses; 4,537,324 ferry trips and 8,554,380 rail journeys over the last 12 months. Rail has seen an increase of 11.55% compared with the 12 months to July 2009.

He may have been told, but was he listening? The real acid test will be what he says after the CBD tunnel study is made public (Jon do you have any further info on a that as September is dragging on)

Looks to me like he was sitting there paying no attention at all, he was probably reading a car magazine.
