Airport Rail Gets Applause

ARC chair Mike Lee today drew applause at the opening of the Onehunga train station this morning when he mentioned airport rail and the public hunger for it.

Auckland mayor John Banks has described airport rail as not happening in his lifetime - and transport minister Steven Joyce, who was present to officially open Onehunga, has said it’s not an immediate priority.

Speaking at the opening of the new Onehunga train station and re-activation of the line this morning, Mr Lee said that polling out this week showed the Auckland public see airport rail as the number one priority.

Mr Lee who has fought hard for years for the Onehunga line to be re-activated paid tribute to those who had also campaigned, especially the CBT, and others who had made it happen.

Ummmm, nice the public is so positive on rail and PT even ahead of the sparks effect - but they obviously don’t realise that there more or less cannot be (useful) airport rail without the CBD tunnel unlocking the needed CBD capacity. Or at least a major Britomart approach tunnel upgrade.
