Onehunga Trains 1st Day Popular!

At 1pm today, the new Onehunga platform was crowded with commuters waiting for a train -and the park and ride was already full as people tried out the new Onehunga service.

About 35 people clambered on board’s Onehunga’s first commuter train to Britomart just after 7am today.
The trip, via the new platforms at Te Papapa and Penrose 3, marked the start of the regular commuter service on the re-established line. Timetables are here

It’s so good to see trains at Britomart saying they are going to Onehunga after all the years of debate!

CBT members, who had initiated the campaign to re-open the lines many years ago were among those on board including Jon Reeves who is now leading the campaign for re-establishing commuter services on the Waikato line and driver Isaac Broome.
In view of the enthusiasm of the Onehunga locals, and the sit-ins on Waikato stations in recent weeks, it’s not impossible to imagine that might happen one day too!
