Photos:Manurewa Bridges Rebuilt

Three rail overbridges in Manurewa need rebuilding to ensure there’s enough space for electrified overhead wires to run beneath them for the Auckland’s new electric trains.
Manurewa’s Jutland Rd bridge is being readied for demolition with no trains running on the Southern Line.
Workers are working right through the weekend 24 hours to complete the work while piling begins for the new abutments and other preparatory works for a new rail bridge.
Other bridges are at Browns Rd and Station Rd.
Preparation work is starting in Browns Rd and Station Rd works will be done between November 15 to 30.
The work will be completed during the Christmas- New Year rail shutdown.
Here is the work at Browns Rd:

Sthern trains weren't running - but along came a freight train!

Jon - Do you know if they are making the bridges wide enough to put 3 tracks under them in the future?

  2. Andy says:

Yes was just about to ask the same thing!

  3. Andrew says:

These photos are Browns Rd and Homai Station, right? The article implies it’s Jutland Rd.

(so historians aren’t confused in 100, 500 years’ time!)

@Andrew Not sure this site will be around in 100 years time! But has been made clearer now.

I understand not - I’ve seen the designs in passing in our office, and they did not seem, to have a third track widening included, I am afraid.

Several were being widened for better footpaths and cycle facilities, but that seemed to be about it.

Maybe not - but it will be available in databases.

Karl - That’s a shame and incredibly short sighted. I remember reading in a report that Kiwirail wanted to lay a third track between Puhinui and Westfield as part of electrification so they can separate freight and commuter traffic, which is going to increase further when Manukau opens.

When the planned works were reviewed by the government to cut costs that was one of the things to go and presumably Kiwirail will still want the third track it at some point which means they would have to rebuild all of these bridges again then.

Are kiwrail going to straighten the track just south of Jutland Rd, where the old old Manurewa station was?
