Baldwin Ave Re-opens: Photos

The new-look re-positioned Baldwin Ave train station in Mt Albert on the Western Line opened for business early this morning.

Baldwin now has room for longer trains

All trains resumed services after the Anniversary Weekend rail work programme and as students return.

Although some work at Baldwin was continuing this morning, the station has been upgraded with higher quality new shelters, enhanced lighting, signage, landscaping and CCTV.

The platforms have also been rebuilt and relocated to accommodate longer trains.

The previous access to the station from Caughey Place/Wesley Ave, has been closed permanently because the station platform has moved.  The new west-bound platform is located well away from there and the tracks were moved closer towards Caughey Pl, meaning there was no room for a footpath.

Baldwin has been closed since December 18 to enable this work to be done.

Hopefully the new look station is attracting new commuters - although signs advertising another no-train weekend are never encouraging!

Let’s remind ourselves this is how it looked in December just before it closed!

Baldwin was among a number of stations which have had their platforms extended to enable 6 car trains, including Mt Eden, Mt Albert and Meadowbank,  Orakei, Te Mahia, Takanini and Greenlane, (where extension work began at the weekend).

Mt Albert residents, from this morning, are enjoying a station more in keeping with neighbouring Avondale’s than the closer Mt Albert station, which got a mini-spruce up during its platform extensions in the form of recycled platform shelters. Baldwin’s makeover only reminds us again that Mt Albert should be a priority for a proper makeover and not await some distant village plan.

Mt Albert gained only recycled old shelters

Worst on the network in need of urgent change remain Greenlane and Otahuhu.

    Excellent to see. Thanks Jon!

  3. Commuter says:

As Andrew commented on an earlier post, weren’t we promised real time electronic PIDs at Baldwin Ave? Or was this just another aspirational red herring emanating from AT’s marketing flacks?

  4. Andrew says:

I need to try and track it down.

Very surprised to see myself in photo 2! I didn’t notice anyone with a camera…

Thales I think it is has started checking out Morningside Station for the ticket scanners etc. today.
Work should begin soon on that front.

  6. Commuter says:

If you look at the platform surfaces of stations around Auckland you’ll find little clusters of three embedded plastic covers, usually with a sprayed squiggle and generally located adjacent to the designated exits/entrances. I guess these are for the scanners and the automated ticket machines. Possibly something coming along soonish and hopefully the roll out will be a little speedier than the PIDs.

Someone forgot to tell the afternoon shift that Baldwin Ave Station was open.

My fiancee (pictured!) was on the 5:24 (6 car), and having missed that I was on the 5:36 (4 car).

Hers failed to stop at Baldwin, and when quizzed the TM said it was because it wasn’t finished yet.

She called me, so I quizzed my TM too, and he told me it was because her train was a six-car set. I had to correct him.

So that’s three separate staff on two separate trains that didn’t get or failed to remember the memo that says Baldwin is open to all trains now.

A communication fail within Veolia. Nobody should be surprised.

Signalhead - there were temporary fences up at Morningside this afternoon but no sign work had actually happened

    Andrew - you’re famous!

    Asquith Ave rail crossing.
I have had very good response from Kiwirail after my request for repair on Asquith Ave pedestrian crossing. I wrote suggesting that while the Baldwin Station was being rebuilt, they could do the above.
Firstly I got a quick reply by letter and then an email telling me that Baldwin was nearly finished ( no mention of Asquith crossing) . I responded with the Q about Asquith Ave crossing and got an email from a Maintenance Manager suggesting we meet on-site; which we have just done.
He agreed with my request to level the paving within the maze to prevent it just being a big puddle when it rains and with a handshake he promised it would be done.
Now that is service which should be recognised.
Thank you Julian of Kiwirail .

Can the tracks be crossed on foot from Baldwin Ave - Margaret Ave?
If so, are there barriers / bells?
    Cheers (overseas)
