Laying Second Rail Track - Photos

The exciting work being done during this Easter shutdown of the rail network, is KiwiRail laying the next part of the Western Line second track.

It’s slow and meticulous work.

This is penultimate phase of the Western Line Duplication.

In June, the final three-kilometres  - between Avondale and Titirangi Rd will be done during the next big rail shutdown, over the three-day Queens Birthday weekend.

This weekend, KiwiRail is also commissioning the new signalling before the new Grafton station opens on April 11.

This is a big leap forward towards electrification and a new era for Auckland train services.

Seems like the day of the track gang is over with just about all work being done by contractors.
Like Patrick I enjoy the regular updates.

  4. Roger says:

Isn’t it surprising how flexible the rail lengths are when the excavator is placing them on the sleepers. Great photos Jon.
