Woman Dies On Mt Albert Track

A  middle - aged female  has died having been struck by a train on track near the Woodward Rd crossing at  Mt Albert at about 3.25pm this afternoon..

Police say in a statement say they are investigating the circumstances leading to the death, and would like to hear from any one who saw the incident occur.

Woodward is near Mt Albert station

This led to disruptions on the Western Line while the tragedy was investigated.

Police can confirm that the person killed when struck by a westbound train near Woodward Rd this afternoon is not a child as some media reports said.

Although identity is yet to be confirmed, police at the scene state that the body is that of a middle-aged female

The incident did not take place on the level crossing at Woodward Road, but was some 150m west of the road, along the track.

The matter is now being referred to the Coroner.

Very sad but as usual I still haven’t had any text alerts about it so instead of being able to arrange alternate travel I’m now stuck in the train.

Also Woodward Ave surely has to be one of the top crossings to be grade separated and video of it featured in rail safety week last year. Hopefully this will speed up things like grade separation and fencing off the network.

The media have been pretty bad at reporting it, They first said that it was a 10 year old boy who got hit. several TM members who lived in the area went wild because they thought it could be thier son

@Matt L What is the point of signing up for text alerts? I gave up a year ago. Have they not got any better?

  5. Matt L says:

Jon - no they are still rubbish, there is now the ridiculous situation where when they do work, each text comes from a different phone number so if you have threaded messages like most smartphones do then you get a separate thread for each message which is really really annoying.

  6. Jon C says:

@Matt L Oh dear. I cant imagine living without threaded messages. They have talked about improvements. They need a big leap forward in all the communication including the bus stop timetable thing on the phone.

  7. George D says:

They really need to install proper pedestrian safety gates like they have overseas. They’re a lot cheaper than lives.

    And do it now.

  8. Matt L says:

George - It apparently wasn’t at a crossing so having gates up wouldn’t have done anything. Also gates are a bit pointless if there is a road crossing at the same place as people can just walk over the road part

While I agree the text service was not that great *tonight*, I must say it usually has worked well for me. It has saved me a few times by allowing me to make alternative plans — so I still think it’s worth signing up on the off-chance you will benefit from it.

@Matt: As for the threading issue, just assign all the various numbers to the same contact and your phone should put them all in the same thread. I’m pretty sure the iPhone does this — not sure about Android et al.

@George: No point wasting ratepayers money on that. I believe that even with all the protection in the world, people will still happily walk in the path of disaster (ignoring several barriers and warning signs on their way). This is an excellent example of this case given the person went 150m out of their way not to use an authorised crossing…

  10. James B says:

Sadly you can’t protect people from the lowest levels of stupidity. Incidentally today I was walking across the George Street crossing when the bells and signals came on. Needless to say I hot footed it across as quickly as I could.
