Auckland Waterfront Trams Start Rolling
After 50-odd years, the trams have returned to Auckland’s streets.
The new Auckland waterfront tams are out today as the tracks and wire infrastructure get tested and the drivers get trained.
On Saturday, you’ll be able to ride them as part of the open day to celebrate the official opening of Wynyard Quarter.

Going to be interesting to see how popular these are.
Hi Jon, you’ve put ’5-odd’ instead of ’50-odd’….
Nerd fact: Technically, we already have trams on public streets (there’s a crossing over Motions Road).
So good to see this! I think Wynyard Quarter will be a destination in itself with the various “personalities” it will have.
Why do we get a old tram?
What wrong with getting a new modern tram to fit in with the modern development around the Wynyard Quarter?
mean looking container kiosk in the background, those designers must have some mad talent
@Ian the council plan was to lease a modern tram from Japan for a short term to show off the benefits.
However the earthquake/tsunami put an end to this.
new trams cost about $3.5 million each, this is for a 45 metre long vehicle though.

so fantastic reading on there.
@ Jon, did any of the stops have shelters yet? be interesting to see if they do and would they also go with an old look?
I really like the signage on the trams.
