Play Nice!

Don’t wish to sound like a crabby teacher. but please remember to play nice here.

I have had several strong complaints over the past few weeks about the tone of  some recent comments personally rubbishing individuals. One points out that in the About section of this blog under posting of comments, I wrote:

The country’s most popular blog Kiwiblog, lists as its number one rule about posting:

1. Who has the right to post comments on this blog?

Apart from me, no-one at all has the right to post comments. Posting is a privilege, not a right.

That suits me! Robust reader debate is a key part of the site. So enjoy and participate. But please keep your views friendly and not personal. Officials often talked about do visit the site and I will delete any comments that cross the line. I hate forums that sink into personal slanging matches where the topic gets lost. I don’t like deleting comments or banning anyone but it does happen when people abuse the privilege..

I have no interest in spending time acting as policemen nor do I have the time so please continue to engage in lively debate about issues but don’t rubbish people who make them in a personal way. That just discourages them from coming back.

Thanks.

Agreed, entirely. Some people may enjoy being nasty, but for the rest of us having to read people slinging things at each other gets tiring pretty quickly. After a while you start skimming the comments, and then you stop reading them entirely.

Good on you for saying it.

Transport seems to stir people’s passions (but then I am sure there are some vicious flame wars going on on gardening websites too!).

I’ve been tempted in the past to respond to some more unpleasant remarks or opinions with some heat myself (and not ALWAYS succeeded in refraining), so it’s good to remind people that they should keep their manners. Like any website with a lot of regulars, the “mood” is important.
