Weekend Disruption For Signal Work

More disruptions to train services this weekend as work continues on installing the new state of the art signalling equipment in preparation for electrification.

Work on the Western Line this week

This weekend:

  • Buses replace trains on the Western Line Britomart to Waitakere (Saturday). Henderson (Sunday)
  • Southern Line buses replace trains Britomart to Newmarket
  • Onehunga Line buses replace trains Britomart to Newmarket
  • With the work being done at Britomart and Quay Park, there are no trains running at all between Newmarket and Britomart both days
  • If you want to travel from Britomart to Newmarket catch either a Western Line rail bus (NZ Bus) from stop D14 which is in Commerce St or a Southern Line rail bus (Howick & Eastern) from stop D15 also in Commerce St
  • Going from Newmarket to Britomart catch either a Western Line rail bus (bound for Britomart) or a Southern Line rail bus - both from stop N7 - 19 Remuera Rd
  • Southern and Onehunga line timetables are here
  • Western Line bus timetables here
  • Sunday there are additional rail buses for the Bon Jovi concert at Vector

The new signalling including automatic train protection to stop a train accidentally going through a red signal.

The new signals include bi-directional running, which allows trains to run on both tracks in both directions.

Signs of this new state of the art technology is already showing up in the Western Line rail section from Grafton to Morningside and this is needed to ensure the RWC trains going to Kingsland have it in time.

All points machines and signal lights are being replaced driven by a new computerised signal system.

Track circuits presently detect when trains are on the network. The new system uses axle counters.

Baldwin Avenue platform work also continues this weekend.

Sad to see graffiti already appearing on those cabinets :( Let’s hope those cabinets have those special paints where it’s easy to clean off unsightly “art”.

    try “axle”

    @chris r quite right

  4. Paul in Sydney says:

What type of Signaling system is it?

  5. signalhead says:

A system called “Westrace mark 1″ (kind of like a glorified PLC) however the proper “state of the art” Westrace mark 2 system is still awaiting final certification so will be swapped over when signed off in England. A true quantum leap from the old relay and timer setup we have most places.
Google should clarify if not try Westinghouse or Invensys’ (rebadged Westinghouse brake and signal) website.
