Brown, Key Open Eden Park

John Key today opened the new-look Eden Park and predicted that in a year’s time “the All Blacks will trounce one of those other teams and Sir Richie McCaw gets to lift the Web Ellis trophy.

He said the Rugby World Cup was the 3rd largest sporting event in the world but this was more than a rugby tournament as there would be festival events around the country.

Auckland’s new mayor Len Brown also attended and spoke at his first official function this morning since what several speakers described as a “Len-slide” yesterday.

Both the prime minister and sports minister made a point of congratulating Len Brown.

John Key wandered around the park and was popular with kids seeking autographs.

Eden Park Trust Board chairman John Waller said there had been some great events over the years at the Park but now it had become a major worldclass event stadium.

From 10am, thousands of people were streaming into the new Eden Park for the festive open day in which you could have a good look around for the first time including seeing areas that will then be closed off the public such as the changing rooms.

The new-look park includes the three-tier 21,5000 seat South Stand and two-tier East stand and an extension of the northern ASB stand.

An internal concourse has been developed to improve crowd flow and there have been improvements to food and beverage outlets, toilets, corporate areas, team and media facilities.
