Sadly during this, rail safety week, comes news a man has been hit by a train and died.
The incident happened near Blenheim.
Police say that at about 3.25 this morning, a freight train has been travelling through the township of Tuamarina near Blenheim when it has struck a male on the track.
The train stopped and emergency services were called to the scene.
Enquiries are currently underway to identify the deceased, an adult male.
Police say a scene examination and investigation in how the man came to be on the rail line is also being conducted.
