RWC2011 Side Tracked

Wonder where all the money is going on transport arrangements fopr the Rugby World Cup 2011 around Eden Park?

Here’s a new example.

Work has begun on building a side track alongside the Morningside station.

It will be for use for just four nights next year.

I’ll give you three (word) guesses.

Rugby. World.  Cup.

The siding will let trains back up so they can be used to carry passengers back after the Eden Park games as relief for the busy Kingsland station.

There was a spare side track at Morningside that was used for any trains broken down .

But now the workmen are out this weekend with fresh track for the full monty, constructing a proper back up stabling track ready just for the RWC2011.

The siding is a former private siding for the timber company there. Used to be freight wagons in there daily until the 1980′s.

@Geoff Interesting, thanks for the historical background.

It looks like they have started to work on the apartments as well

  4. Carl says:

Jon… it says it will be used for 4 nights, will it actually be left standing after the games? like as a back up for anything in the future? surely it will be left in?

  5. Jon C says:

@Carl yes- I just said four nights because I was pointing out the object was to provide backup during the big EWC games.

  6. Simon says:

Might it come in handy for breakdowns on the Western Line too?

  7. karl says:

With all the money spent on motorways and fast-tracking that is officially for the RWC, I am not too fussed about some train work done for the same purpose. Contrary to motorway widening, this is actually RELATED (cause & effect, if anyone remembers in relation to the RWC) to cup transport needs.

  8. Andrew says:

I agree with Karl. This also adds redundancy to the rail system and it also helps incrementally add to our rail infrastructure.

One would hope that we could use all this improved infrastructure to help in bids for future international events?

  9. Paul says:

Surely it will be used for any other big event in the future

  10. Jon C says:

@Patrick yes they are finally starting work on the leaky apartments.
