A nasty hit and run in Hamilton this afternoon involving two crashes.
The incident began when the elderly couple’s car was hit from behind at the intersection of Boundary Rd and Heaphy Tce about 2.10pm. Police say the couple’s car, a Honda Jazz, was flipped on to a traffic island at the intersection.
As the elderly man got out of the car to check on his wife he collapsed and the offending driver drove off.
Sergeant John Stapleford of the Waikato Highway patrolsaid: “Officers responding to calls about the crash came across a car matching the description of the fleeing vehicle however the driver saw them and turned to avoid Police. Unfortunately for both the driver and his passenger this turn resulted in their car colliding with a power-pole.”
The elderly couple were taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance however Police are unaware of their condition at this time. “
The offending driver attempted to flee the scene but was arrested and is being interviewed.
