Auckland-Themed Murals To Grace Grafton Station - Photos

Auckland-themed murals will grace the shiny new Park Rd Grafton train station, as commuters wait on the platform looking up at the walls.

The murals, being erected now, show local landmarks such as Grafton Bridge and the Lion Brewery in Khyber Pass Rd, near the station.

Long-existing ‘train art’ and graffiti on the walls around the area, especially on the Boston Road side, was wiped off this weekend.

Newmarket’s new station was also graced in the junction with murals when it opened, although they were soon attacked by taggers.

The most prominent one also featured Lion Breweries.

Ironically, there is growing concern among some locals about what’s happening with the prominent Lion Breweries site, which is close to the new Grafton station and was hoped to have featured shops, cafes and offices.

The breweries is still using it for some more months until its new South Auckland plant is fully operational but the new owners, AMP, have yet to announce its current thinking and post-recession plans for the site and complete resource consent.

Why would they be worried? I can tell you that it is not going to be a retail-only development (the local roads can’t cope), and it won’t be industrial, because industrial land in Auckland is cheap compared to this site. So the fact that it is taking longer to do may even be a blessing in disguise, because it won’t be a quick and dirty job, and because they will have a functioning and much extended rail system directly around their site when it opens.

I still think something like 20-30% retail and and 60-70% residential (maybe 4-7 stories?) is most likely.

This is great and should happen at every station on the network… Boy they are doing a great job with this station… I sometimes find it hard to believe it is in Auckland..! Lol…
