Key Won’t Confirm Bolger’s KiwiRail’s Future

The prime minister this afternoon refused to confirm whether KiwiRail chair Jim Bolger will remain in his job.

At the weekend, transport minister Steven Joyce, dropped a strong hint on TV3′s new The Nation Saturday current affairs programme that the government was considering changing the KiwiRail governance but said he was not the minister to make any announcement about former prime minister Jim Bolger no longer continuing.

This afternoon, John Key was asked at the Beehive post-Cabinet news conference if Mr Bolger was leaving.

He said that Mr Bolger, who is also involved with NZ Post, had “proven to be a very effective chairman of a number of SEOs.”

Pressed whether he would stay on at KiwiRail, he said he “couldn’t confirm this” but added that KiwiRail had been set up under Labour so had a short-term element to its initial setup.
