New Lynn’s First Underground Train Has Test Run - Photos & Video

New Lynn’s first ever underground train passed through the station in the new rail trench at 5pm tonight. Here is a short video of it:

The historic occasion was watched by a few of the workers who had been working on the site and a couple of trainspotters!

It was two hours behind schedule before making the journey from the New Lynn to the other end of the track just beyond the Clark St/ Rankin Ave roundabout - underground. It later returned through to Britomart.

This use of the rail trench marks the end of overground trains across New Lynn township’s busy intersection and will make it easier for traffic through the town. The underground train was also barely heard overground.

At last relief for motorists who won't have to wait for trains

Tonight’s train was a ‘test train’ from Britomart to ensure everything worked.

The first scheduled commuter trains to use the station will run from Monday morning, if all checks out OK.

Last minute track inspection before the train arrives

Workers check all systems are GO before giving the OK

END OF ERA: Overground track section was closed tonight for ever

Jon - Did they actually take the train all the way through the trench. In one of the photos you can see the tamper in the background which is sitting in exactly the same place it was on Thursday and Friday nights.

I’m looking forward to going through on Monday morning.

  2. Jon C says:

@Matt L They could only go as far as the tamper on the Clark/Rankin side.

Did you take any better photos of the railway grafitti in the second-to-last photo? Looks cool.

  4. Jon C says:

@ingolfson Its not graffiti but part of the art work that has been commissioned for the trenches. http://www.aktnz.co.nz/2010/02/08/art-graces-new-lynn-rail-trench-photos/
