New ASB HQ Starts Tank Farm Re-Birth

The prime minister this afternoon officiated at the turning of the first sod  on Tank Farm, Wynyard Quarter.

This marks the transformation of the industrial area into a new inner city waterfront suburb.

The ASB has announced it will locate its new headquarters there to help kick start the area.

The 6,800 square metre site for the development is at the corner of Jellicoe and Halsey Streets.

Kiwi Income Property Trust has entered into a conditional development agreement with ASB to develop the new head office premises - the total development budget is $121 million .

Construction will start by mid 2011.

EYESORE: Tank Farm is finally being transformed

The actual physical work on the Jellicoe St area will start soon, the old red shed there will be restored and a large public plaza created at the eastern end of Jellicoe St near where the new ASB building will be.

This is also close to the interim Te Wero bridge that will connect the quarter to the rest of the CBD.

This first stage  involving Jellicoe Street itself, and the public space will be done in time for the RWC.

That comprises:

  • a cycling and pedestrian bridge connection between Jellicoe Street and the Viaduct Basin;
  • a new Events Centre; a major upgrade of the Jellicoe Street urban landscape including Silo Park; and food, beverage and entertainment facilities on North Wharf
  • a permanent and expanded seafood market run by Sandfords and marine facilities aimed at the super yacht refit industry

The storage tanks are being removed as their leases expire.

Some of those leases last into the 2020s…

This is third hand info but I heard the other day that even 10 years ago most of the tanks were already empty and not being used.

The bridge to get from the viaduct to the tank farm will be such a bonus. Even better imagine a light rail system from Jellicoe Street to Mission Bay or even St Heliers.

Apparently these days that has moved mostly to Whangarei. Even the cruise ships aren’t being fueled from here anymore, they are topped up by a smaller fuel freighter that shuttles back and forth from the North.

I understand the permanent bridge is to at least be future-proofed for light rail. In the short term, with lack of development, a light rail (to where?) would be pretty useless.

Oh, and lets hope that ASB’s construction managers are smart enough not to start digging just when the RWC starts ;-)

The northwest drift of company HQs: Telecom, Vodafone, ASB, Air NZ. The other banks have stayed closer to Queen st though: Westpac and BNZ. Will change the makeup of mid/downtown.

Even a tram going from Britomart to Jellicoe street across the new bridge would be beneficial I think.
