Business Group: Why The Queens Wharf Rush?

Auckland’s CBD business group Heart of the City says everyone needs to pause and not let RWC “over-excitement” drive development of Queens Wharf.

“The problem with the latest push is that it lumps Queen’s Wharf in with the development of Eden Park and a rugby event rather than looking properly as to how it fits in with the development of the central city waterfront,” says the group.

It continues: “The Ports of Auckland have been advocating for a cruise ship terminal on Queen’s Wharf and then further huge reclamations to make the container port 50% bigger than the Auckland Domain. We don’t want Auckland to go down that path.

” If a cruise ship terminal and a major redevelopment is a good idea now, it will still be a good idea after the rugby is over. So, what’s the rush? “

The CBD advocates call Queens Wharf a potential jewel in the centre of the CBD waterfront.

Heart of the City has set up a questionnaire to get public views on the issue.

The Government today released the design options - including this near $100m one:

Today the official planning team for Auckland’s RWC launched an online questionnaire to ask what event Aucklanders want to see during the RWC.

They ask: “Do you want to see live screenings of matches, school programmes, artistic activities, or something different altogether? ”
