When A New Station Was a Big Deal

I love this old newsreel footage of the opening of the 1963 Palmerston North train station.
As the battle to save Capital Connection starts, it’s interesting to see how the whole town turns out to welcome a new station in their city. Would the same happen today?

    68 trains a day in 1963! Now just 4 (when the Overlander is running).

    Most of those trains were freight.
