Name Auckland’s New Transport SmartCard

Now the integrated ticketing card is all go, it’s time to name the new card. See comments below.

The latest suggestions are hereoyster.ping

Some cities have opted for fishing-themes such as Oyster - a theme adopted by Infratil with their Wellington-based Snapper card.

So what should we go with - here’s the chance to get something uniquely New Zealand.

Other names include Melbourne’s Myki card (as in My key) South Korea’s T-money (by the Snapper company), London’s regional sQuidcard, Japan’s Suica card.

So what do you reckon? The Joyce? The MikeLee card?

  1. James says:

I think it should be called a “Waka” card in the spirit of early explorers arriving in New Zealand and the love of travel that is so important to us New Zealanders.

  2. Bob says:

Let’s call it SAIL card - as in city of sails .

  3. Judy says:

    I like Silver Fern Card

  4. George says:

Soon to be defunct “Go Rider” card why not take it over? can they?

  5. Tom says:

    Crayfish card

  6. Helen says:

    Tasman card

  7. Pure100% says:

Green card - lets you onto the train/bus etc.

  8. PukekoheLad says:

It’s got to be a Maori name. I like waka. How about Pahi - Maori for bus? Pahi Card

  9. Sarah says:

    How about Waitemata.

  10. Adam says:

How about something that recognises LOTR and Peter Jackson. Would he let us use Weta?

  11. Blues supporter says:

Come on guys has to be something rugb y especially with the RWCup coming up. Name it after Colin Meads or some AB hero.

  12. Andu says:

    Pohutakawa card :)

  13. Pete says:

Dont hate me but I like Joyce card beause it sounds like Kiwi like choice. Got ya Joyce bro? Choice!

  14. rtc says:

National will no doubt call it the “loser cruiser” card as it allows you to easily ride all the loser cruisers in Auckland.

  15. ACT supporter says:

@Pukekohe lad Ridiculous. maori cant have a name for bus.

  16. rebeccaT says:

Is it too clique to call it Kia Ora?

  17. Andrew says:

Not Pahi. This is supposed to be integrated, remember?

    +1 vote for Sailcard.

  18. Karori bus commuter says:

Why not Dapper because it’s one step up from that other one….

  19. Beachbum says:

Tui. Then you can get them to sponsor it.

  20. Cambennett says:

Just keep it simple. Call it the A card.

  21. Little T says:

How about the Hone card. With a picture of his cheeky grin. Then when the bus or train is inevitably late, we can go that mother*** bus

  22. Heather says:

    Snapper… oyster… I’m thinking the Trout Card.

  23. I’d call it the “Pukekoe”. Speedy birds when they want to be - goes along with the kiwi spirit without over using the kiwi bird.

My daughter loves them, they have a great appeal with kids, a childlike spirit.

    My .02. :)

  24. James says:

Depends on whether the card will be local to Auckland I suppose. If just Auckland then I like “Sail”, “A”, “Weta”. Like the idea of the harbour, but some of us live on the Manukau too. Keep the ideas coming. My second suggestion is “Wave” card - ie the action to validate + the waves surrounding our islands on the harbours.

  25. nzbcfanboi says:

The Kokako Card it’s blue like harbours that surrounds it blue for ARTA and MAXX and lastly blue for the National Party.

  26. M P says:

Paua card?? Kina card?? Kingfisher card??

  27. karl says:

    How about ‘Tuatara’
kind if nice ring to it.
    Also represents a delightfully kiwi,
something from prehistoric times that somehow still seems to just keep on going, just.

And then there is the Tuatara it self, a prehistoric creature that has stood the test of time.

  28. Jeremy Harris says:

    How about the “f**kyousnapper card”..?

My money is on Bob’s Sail Card, has the marine theme of the other cards, suggests speed and represents Auckland…

  29. William M says:

A ‘blue’ type of name. It needs to highlight the blues of our city, from the dark blues of the night skies of the night life, to the blues of the coasts of our city. The blues that represent our sports teams. I can’t pick green or red or yellow for a city like Auckland. Most of all, the card’s name needs to be DIFFERENT. Names of native birds/fish are sweet, cuddly, but may not always represent the image we want truly integrated public transport to have.

    My 2c.

  30. M P says:

    The “Jafa Pass”

  31. Summer kid says:

It needs a NZ name not an Auckland name because its going to be rolled out nationwide. How about jandal? Some Kiwi icon?

  32. Mainlander says:

Keep it simple - ‘Metrocard’ has worked well in Christchurch (Metro is the brand name for Public Transport in Christchurch, like Maxx in Auckland and Metlink in Wellington).

‘Maxxcard’ instantly links it to the integrated Maxx transport brand - this is all about an integrated Public Transport system after all!

  33. Uroskin says:

The “Jafa card” is a good one.
My vote would go to “Orca Card” (reclaiming the derogratory provincial Orc sneer against Aucklanders)

  34. Jenny says:

To keep with the nautical theme how about Opo the famous legendary NZ dolphin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opo_%28dolphin%29

  35. Ms B says:

    How about Whalerider card?

  36. Sheeeny says:

‘Nexus’ connecting Auckland and the nation.

  37. Countmein says:

I dont know if the Maori and NZRU would allow but Haka is famous world wide and associated with the RWC which will ideal when the card is launched iin time for it

  38. Manurewa Bus says:

Hei-tiki,the maori neck pendant. You’ll probably carry it or wear it like a lanyard.

  39. Handyman says:

No 8 wire is a famous NZ saying for us DYI guys and gals and sounds like a bus, although the buses seem more complex these days like route 432! I vote Number8

  40. Birkenhead ferry user says:

Dont forget us folk on the North Shore.
We might not have trains - but we use buses and ferries.
And they’re calling the bridge idea Anzac so how about the Anzac card?

  41. eddie says:

It has to be the Mate card.

  42. She'll be right says:

I like something slangy and Bro like Chur.
    That’s Kiwi through and through.
Except those Pommies coming here for the RWC probably won’t cope.

  43. Kiwipom says:

    i like jafa card

  44. Ben McMahon says:

Let’s call it The Ed to honour Sir Hillary.

  45. JETWANK says:

I reckon as it’s Public transport, and it’s dealing with money…

    P-Money?

  46. Doug says:

Look it can be nothing other than the JAFA card/pass. Otherwise we’re taking ourselves all a little too seriously.

  47. George says:

Do we really want a different card for each town in NZ? Are we reinventing the wheel and making them incompatible?

  48. Linda says:

How about the island card. Doesn’t have to be just for Auckland eh!

  49. Jenny Chen says:

It will be a national system. I think something that embodies the concept of NZ as a whole would be better than calling it the Jafacard which only refers to one city. Or just something more generalised

Possibly ‘9yards card’ in reference to the phrase “The whole nine yards” since you should be able to ‘go all the way’ using the transport system.

  50. James says:

Here’s a list of many of the cards used in other countries:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_smart_cards

  51. Joshua says:

I still think the JAFA Card so we can show Auckland had something first for once.

  52. Anthony says:

    Choice metro?

  53. I like the sound of LAVA. Sail and Silver Fern are also good.

  54. Mozz says:

    How about the LATTE card.

  55. Taz says:

Last card like the well-known card game

  56. James says:

    the ‘ACE’ card.

  57. Aaron says:

I’d say “JAFArider” would work well it’s a mix of different names.
