Kingsland Station Revamp For RWC Began Today (Photos)

Work on upgrading the newish Kingsland railway station began this morning, including a new pedestrian underpass. The upgrade will total $4m.

Kingsland will of course play an important role in coping with the thousands heading for Eden Park during the RWC but based on experience so far, an upgrade is needed to improve the flow of pedestrian traffic especially after marches and to cope with the expected volumes.

RUGBY CRUSH: Kingsland can't handle it

There was quite a crush and pedestrian traffic jam (right) when I watched arrivals and departures of rugbygoers at Kingsland during the last big game – a Bledesloe Cup clash. Despite the presence of security patrols, you could see some impatient fans considering potentially dangerous shortcuts such as crossing the track.

So the improvements include building the new underpass from the station near Sandringham Rd built beneath the tracks to help relieve the pressure points.

The station’s southern platform is being extended and widened in the new upgrade. The station still feels new- and is. It was built in 2004 for $4m.

The work will continue until April.

For the RWC, electrification won’t be ready but trains heading back to the city will be loaded on both platforms of Kingsland with westbound passengers leaving from Morningside station.

A link lane will be installed from Cricket Ave to Sandringham Rd to prove access for pedestrians heading to the Kingsland town centre, midtown bus operations in New North Rd, Ponsonby or the central city.

The new rugby stand development at Eden Park (below) is on schedule and rising amid the other stands.eden broadcast

Silly buggers should have gone for a stadium at Carlaw Park. Handy to the city and transport. If Auckland can get it wrong, they will.

Yes but at least we got a nice Kingsland and Morningside station out of the deal!
