How’s It Looking: Glen Eden
It will take about another three weeks for KiwiRail to finish the changes to the famous Glen Eden pedestrian overbridge.
Over Christmas, workers removed the big railway footbridge ramps at an estimated cost of $600,000.
The bridge remains for locals to get to the local shops but the ramps will be replaced by stairs over Anniversary weekend.
Locals hated the dominating look of the ramps so they’re getting the sort of look Swanson got, as shown below.
The Glen Eden locals who complained think that sort of look with stairs is more in keeping with the lovingly restored station building.

I wouldn’t describe the Swanson bridge as a thing of beauty, but they obviously tried a bit harder than in Glen Eden and it looks more functional.
They should have a policy (Auckland Transport, NZTA, etc.) of including stairs whenever there is a zig-zag ramp, as the ramps are frustratingly slow for the majority able to climb.
Bit of a waste of money in my view - the old ramps weren’t that ugly. Yes, the station building was nicely restored, but the area around it isn’t a museum town.
Agree that ramps should be combined with stairs.
@Mark, The old ramps WERE that ugly because they were a major target for taggers. Also, wheelchairs couldn’t even use it anyway because it was too steep. Enough said.
Is Glen Eden also getting lifts like Swanson?
@Sacha , no Glen Eden isn’t getting lifts, just stairs
