Wellington’s Bigger Tunnels

 

Wellington rail commuters heading north are still experiencing slow speeds while new developments are bedded in after the Christmas rail work.

Between Pukerua Bay and Paekakariki passengers  now travel through 4 larger tunnels, over new and repaired track around the Wellington Network. A brand new signaling system has been commissioned between McKays Crossing and Waikanae, some lengths of the overhead power lines have been renewed and new substations are feeding power to the system.

But for a while, there are speed restrictions on the Paraparaumu line. A KiwiRail spokesman says: ”Until we get some tonnage over the new tracks to ensure they have settled in, and for us to get familiar with the signals we will be driving at restricted speed in some sections.”

    FYI: The masts in the picture were replaced as part of the work along this section of the line.

    Does anyone know whether the track through North South Junction is single or double?

    All photos I’ve seen indicate that its single
