Vehicle Sales Drop

New car sales fell last month and even the warmer temperatures didn’t stimulate the motorcycle sales market.

MTA says sales the month before were strong because people were beating the GST increase so it’s not reading much into the drop.

Registration data just released by NZ Transport Agency shows that at 7,297 units, the overall new vehicle market for October  was  down by 647 units (8.1%) compared to September 2010. However, compared to the same month last year the market was up by 399 units (5.8%)/ For the year to date, sales are up 7,805 units (13%) compared to the same time in 2009.

New passenger car sales of 5,866 units were 432 units (6.8%) lower than September 2010 but 186 units (3.3 percent) ahead of October 2009. For the year to date, sales are up 5,667 units (12 percent) compared to the same time in 2009.

Commercial sales of 1,431 units were down by 215 units (13 percent) compared to September 2010 but 213 units up (17.5%) compared to October 2009. For the year to date sales are up 2,138 units (16%) compared to 2009.

The three traditional leaders dominated passenger car sales for the month accounting for more than half the total sales between them. Toyota led the way, with 1,533 units (26%), followed by Ford with 743 units (12.6%), and Holden, 719 units (12.2%).

Used import car sales of 6,958 units were 472 units (6%) lower than September 2010 but 914 units (15%) ahead of October 2009. For the year to date, sales are up 18,478 units (34%) compared to the same time in 2009.

Motocycle sales of 494 units were the same as September. Sales of scooters (under 60cc) however, were up for the month by 24 units, exactly offsetting the reduction in motorcycles (over 60cc). For the year to date the market remains down by 1,645 units (23%) compared to 2009.
