Video: Chinese Loco For KiwiRail

Here’s a video of the first China Northern diesel locomotive for KiwiRail from You Tube.

Last year, the government ordered new DL 2700kW locos and new carriages for Tranz Scenic tourist trains and they have begun arriving..
The purchase of 20 DL locomotives cost $75 million and the order was won by China’s CNR Loric Import and Export Corporation
A key feature of the new locomotives is that they are double-ended.

  1. rtc says:

Did they have to lay narrow gauge tracks to enable them to build/test this train?

  2. ingolfson says:

That track looked rather old, so likely not. If it is indeed in China, can’t tell.

  3. rtc says:

Looking at the video again there appears to be to tracks to the tight perhaps to allow for both narrow and standard gauage trains.

The dual gauge rails appear to have been laid in this way to prevent the possibility of derailment.

I have seen metre gauge (I think it was), laid in a Chinese loco factory, for locos being manufactured for the Thai Railways

Notice you say ‘won’ i think the word should be given as Kiwirail never went to a competitive bid process on these.
