Car Goes Wrong Way, Fatal (Update)

 
1030 PM UPDATE:
The North-Western motorway westbound is still closed between Waterview and Te Atatu.
Apart frrom the deceased, two other motorists have been transported to Hospital in Status 2 condition.
Sergeant Stu Kearns : ‘We’re appealing for any witnessses who saw a green 4 door Mitsubishi Galant car travelling east in the westbound lane before the crash occurred, to contact the Waitemata Serious Crash Unit on 481.0300′
EARLIER
At least one person is dead after a terrible crash on the Northwestern motorway tonight .
Witnesses report seeing a vehicle travelling the wrong way in the westbound lanes before the crash.
The North-Western Motorway has been closed westbound from the Rosebank and Patiki Road interchanges as Police and emergency services deal with a crash involving at least four cars and one fatality.
Motorway signage is in place advising motorists to exit the motorway at Great North Road, Waterview.
Debris is blocking all lanes and the scene is expected to take some hours to clear.
People travelling towards the city are asked to take particular care when passing the scene - police wish to avoid collateral cashes caused by distracted drivers.

Motorway signage is in place advising motorists to exit the motorway at Great North Road, Waterview.

In the mean time motorists are asked to follow the directions on the overhead signs and to avoid the area if at all possible.  People travelling towards the city are asked to take particular care when passing the scene - police wish to avoid collateral crashes caused by distracted drivers.

    I was left waiting on moterway for hour and a half 6 metres away from crash!! It was horrible…we need to get these idiots off the road!!

    One news report gave the driver at 81 years of age. Probably confused.

    What I don’t get about these folks is why they, after getting on the wrong way, just continue driving!!! Why would the natural response not to be to pull over? Reverse? Even stopping dead in the middle of the lane would probably be better instead of adding your speed to the speed in the opposite direction.

    Am I the only person who looked at the Herald article yesterday (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10661231) and thought the list of similar incidents speaks to something being *very* wrong with that section of the motorway?
