Kopu Closes For Night

Kopu Bridge, just south of Thames on State Highway 25, will be closed to traffic this coming Thursday night.

The closure will enable NZTA to carry out maintenance work on the bridge deck.

The bridge is being replaced, and the new two-lane one will open mid-2012.

A clearly signposted detour will be in place between 9pm Thursday 20 May and 5am Friday 21 May.

Motorists travelling to and from Auckland will be directed to use SH2 and SH26 as an alternative to SH25 and Hamilton motorists will need to travel to and from Thames via Paeroa Tahuna Road and/or SH26.

NZTA Acting Waikato State Highway Manager, Richard Young advises motorists to either delay travelling until after 5am Friday or to allow an extra 30 - 40 minutes travel time by taking the alternative route.

This work is weather dependant. If bad weather prevents the work being carried out on Thursday night the work will be postponed until the first available fine night next week.

The existing 465m long one-lane swing bridge across the Waihou River was built in 1927. The existing bridge is classified as a Category 1 historic structure by the Historic Places Trust. The NZTA will decide how the existing bridge is to be used and maintained following community consultation.

Well, some maintenance would be required in any case, wouldn’t it - as a heritage structure, they can’t just let it rot. Paint it in anti-rust paint and let the Hauraki Plains cycleway use it.
