Kumeu Rail Service Plan Stalled?

Since the cancellation of the Britomart to Helensville, service, there has been talk of ARTA introducing services to Kumeu or Huapai, where patronage may be higher than experienced all the way to Helensville.

Today’s ARC transport and urban development  commitete meeting heard that ARTA officers have been pursuing potential options for the provision of rail services to Kumeu or Huapai from late this year but there doesn’t appear to be any real progress.

In fact  ”ARTA has advised that as a result of cost pressures from Veolia, they have to re-consider their plans.”

The services were to be introduced from “late 2010  in conjunction with the introduction of 10 minute services on the Western Line.”

The committee was told in a report that ARTA has at this stage not provided further information that would enable the committee to consider options for the delivery of these services.

something for the committee to discuss next month.

My own personal opinion is we should get the services running on time well first on 10 minute frequencies inside the Swanson limit, then look at expansion…
A co-ordinated feeder bus from these suburbs to the rail head, arriving just before trains leave is by far the best option…

You won’t attract many people with such an approach, as people up that way are very car-centric. It’ll need to be train all the way or nothing at all. People will not do car-bus-train (multiple connections) when they can just drive all the way.

They will if the train leaves within a couple of minutes of the connection arriving, the bus stops immeaditely adjacent to the station, the ticket they buy on the bus is valid (and includes the price of the train upfront) and the total time of the bus/train journey is faster (and/or much cheaper) than a solely car based journey…
Phew, I see why good PT is so hard..!
