Kingsland ‘Missing Link” Cycleway Ready For Riding Next Week

Great news for Western cyclists.

Sometime next week, you’ll be able to sneak a ride on the so-called Kingsland cycleway – the missing 1.24k stretch of cycleway alongside the Northwestern motorway, that  pieces together the mainly off-road 12km route between central and west Auckland.

The pressure has come on to finish it and sealing takes place in the next few days.

Then, it’s virtually ready.

It has yet to have a date for an official opening, and there’s talk that John “Cycle Trail” Key will be doing it.

But the much-awaited link should be OK for cyclists to get their wheels on it next week, before autumn and winter arrive.

It will give us cyclists a mainly offroad 12km stretch of cycleway between Newton Rd and Te Atatu Rd and reduces that highly annoying section where you have to weave around houses at present before rejoining the cycleway..

It is really good I know cyclists and residents alike must be sick of the tension on the narrow old streets of lower Kingsland…

  2. max says:

I didn’t like the stretch too much, but “tension”? Is it so bad at peak hour time?

Anyway, good to hear it’s almost done. Where did you get that info from, Jon?

  3. max says:

Also, the cycleway continues on past Te Atatu Road, all the way to Central Park Drive, though about 60% of the further section is on local roads again.

oooh, fantastic! I am keen to use it to cycle out to West Auckland

  5. Tim says:

Checked it out yesterday evening. The pavement had just started to be laid on the southern end and it’s looking really good.
There’s still a fair bit to go though - I’ll be surprised if its completed before easter.

  6. Brian says:

Just rode past it today - The seal looks finished and perfect, but they’ve still got the fences up. I think I’m gonna ride over and check it tomorrow. The on-road stretch always bothered me.

  7. JT says:

The Fulton Hogan guy that I asked when cycling past on the way to work today said it would be open on Thursday 15 April.

  8. Jon C says:

@JT @1030 at Nixon park if you want to see the opening!
