First Signs Of Manukau Rail Link Trench - Photos

Around Lambie Drive, the first visible signs of the rail trench that forms a key part of the Manukau rail link development.

It looks very familiar to those of us who have been closely watching the New Lynn rail trench development.

The 2km section of new track will link Davies Ave in Manukau City with the Southern railway line at Puhinui.

The track will run under Lambie Drive and Plunket Ave and across Hayman Park.

Part of the rail link will run inside a 300m trench beginning at Lambie Dr and finishing at Davies Ave. It will be 7m deep at its deepest point and 18m wide at its widest. 47,000 m3 of silty Puketoka sands will be excavated in total.

This is the first extension of the Auckland rail network since the eastern line in 1930, and opens in the first half of next year.

Bloody hell, that was quick… If only they’d shake a leg like this in Onehunga…

  2. Matt says:

Probably helps speed things up when they don’t have running trains to contend with (doesn’t explain Onehunga though)

  3. Geoff says:

Onehunga has never been given its own staff and construction schedule. The whole project is done by staff and equipment from other DART projects, in the gaps between other projects. It’s basically a “filler” project, so although small, it’s taking three years.

So it must have a good BCR ;-)

Still, at least Onehunga’s now (finally) on the map! (on board the trains)

Now if only they could build the actual station…

  6. News encouraging and interesting - especially where electrification is concerned. Shame that the wires are not to reach Waitakere though, despite that tunnel. Please don’t refer to “Train Station” but the good old expression “Railway Station.” The other is American. Best wishes………J.G.
