Wellington’s Redwood Station Closes For 4 Months

Another Wellington rail station ugrade.

lostRedwood Station in Tawa will close temporarily in early February to allow for more than $1m worth of improvements to the station platforms.

Both platforms at the station will be demolished and completely rebuilt.

To allow the station to be upgraded, it will close for up to four months .

The regional council says it tries to keep stations open while they upgrade them but the reality is in some cases construction constraints mean they simply can’t do that.

Once complete, there will be two new 170 metre long platforms at Redwood Station, slightly higher than the current platforms, and with safety features such as yellow tactile strips at the platform edge.

I’m scratching my head over this one…. I have to wonder who is making the decisions here. $1000000 seems like a lot of money to me & 4 months seems like a very long time to do the job.

Looking at Brent C’s article it seems to me like a lot of money is being spent on platforms and not enough on the stations. A common sense approach would be to keep and modernise existing buildings where possible… That Plimmerton station effort is very surprising clearly there are some very smart risk takers at kiwirail that are listening to the locals and trying something very unusual and outside the box to make it work. Community involvement can only be beneficial for getting the locals to use the train services as well as encourage them to keep an eye on and look after their station!

Brent, thanks. Good to see all the station upgrades happening in Wellington. As with Auckland, it’s literally changing the rail landscape!
