It is interesting to see that in typical New Zealand fashion we assume the best solution is to rip it all out at start again. I agree that the fly over should no longer be used by vehicle traffic, but what’s stopping it, or atleast part of it, remaining and being turned into a raking park, and urban beach if you will? It faces north so gets plenty of sun and divides that gaping space into two intimate lanes and a ramping public space. Rather than becoming a flat, transitory space as shown in the renders, it could become a destination, with terraced seating, planting, some small kiosk type shops and a possible stage at ground level to be used an urban theatre. It could be a good way to reuse a piece of infrastructure in Auckland. Dare I name drop New York’s High Line as a prime precedent?
