ITU Triathlon World Cup Affects PT

Public transport will be affected on Sunday by the big triathlon event – as well as other traffic restrictions being in place.

The ITU Triathlon World Cup is a one day event with four races over two different courses.

Buses: Due to road closures for the event, a number of bus stops in the CBD will be temporarily relocated. Route diversions will also affect a number of bus services during this time. In the CBD Auckland Transport Ambassadors will be on hand to help passengers with new bus stop locations. A limited number of bus services along Tamaki Dr will be suspended from the beginning of the day until midday on Sunday. Normal scheduled buses will operate on a Sunday timetable. Normal fares apply.

Trains: Spectators travelling to the event can take advantage of extra train services on the Western Line as trains run every half hour from 8.30am and hourly on the Eastern and Southern Lines. Normal fares apply and customers can purchase Family and Day Rover rail passes from the Britomart, Newmarket, New Lynn and Papakura ticket offices.

There will be major road closures and parking restrictions affecting access to the CBD and the city’s eastern waterfront area.

Organisers expect big crowds around Auckland’s waterfront to watch some of the world’s best elite triathlete’s swim, run and cycle around downtown Auckland streets.

Auckland Transport says roads in these areas will be very busy with delays expected. Journeys should be planned allowing plenty of extra time to arrive at destinations or motorists should consider alternative routes.

I’m surprised they have cancelled all Eastern Bay buses, but I see they have provided a “Eastern Shuttle” service instead (details here http://www.maxx.co.nz/info/service-updates/stop-closures-cbd-and-tamaki-drive-due-to-triathlon-world-cup.aspx). From looking at the Eastern Shuttle map it seems they could have simply terminated north-bound buses at Mission Bay and started south-bound buses at Mission Bay to achieve the same effect. Going to the effort of cancelling the whole service (leading to people thinking that there would be no PT services at al) only to provide a new tempoary service basically following the same routes defies logic…

It was a pleasant relief after the RWC for access to Auckland to return to normal.

And then there was a marathon that closed off parts of it including access to SH1 from several North Shore suburbs much less access to eastern suburbs.

But by this weekend I’m over it completely. Roads, especially main ones closed for yet another event and one that would probably not generate any revenue for greater Auckland. It was near impossible to go thorugh the mid to lower part of the CBD much less access the eastern suburbs.

Is there not a better way of hosting these things other than shutting entire parts of Auckland down?
