The possibility of more showers tonight and tomorrow is not expected to interfere with progress, on connecting the Victoria Park tunnel to the Auckland motorway system.
Work is expected to finish early on Monday morning as planned when northbound traffic is switched from the Victoria Park flyover to the tunnel
The major road works to connect the northbound lanes of State Highway 1 to the tunnel approach began last night just north of the Nelson Street off ramp.
- Northbound lanes of the the Northern Motorway are closed at night between Nelson and Fanshawe. Detour Fanshawe St onramp via Nelson St.
- Motorway northbound is one lane only during the day north of the Nelson St offramp
- The northbound connections from State Highway 16 to the Northern Motorway will be closed continuously throughout the weekend.
All closures will be lifted and the two tunnel lanes opened by 5am Monday.

Alternative routes north are:
- Via the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) and the newly completed Hobsonville to North Shore (SH18 – SH1) link
- Via the CBD and Fanshawe Street motorway on ramp
- Via the Curran Street on ramp

One of the 3 lanes will not be in use after Monday. Does anyone know why?
And will Wellington Street be connected as of Monday?
Wasp - Probably so drivers can get used to using it and also to make sure it is performing exactly as it should with constant traffic through it.
@Wasp This is a major change. You can’t expect everything to happen in one swoop. The flyover is due to open in the new configuration on Monday January 9.
All additional northbound capacity will be released in March, when the third lane in the tunnel and a new peak-time lane through St Marys Bay open.
I believe Wellington St is closed to the end of the year at least, and yes, the third lane north through the tunnel won’t open till the works in St Mary’s Bay are completed.
