Wellington Rail Record

Wellington’s Tranz Metro carried 46,792 passengers last weekend.

That’s a record for the Wellington commuter service.

The previous record was 41,790.

KiwiRail says passenger numbers for rugby games at the Wellington Stadium normally peak at around 4,000 people and 7,000 a day for the hugely popular Wellington Sevens tournament. So it more than tripled this number on both weekends with very little disruptions or delays.  Performance stats over the last month have been 95%.

Wellington trains: A record

During the Rugby World Cup matches at Wellington Stadium, Tranz Metro ran both timetabled and additional services with extra capacity to cater for match crowds, including special late night services for the weekend games. More 8-car Matangi have been in use.

:O The matangis have 8 cars?

  2. pete says:

Nope, each set is 2 cars. However you can couple 4 sets together

I’d like to see an 8 car Matangi, that would be impressive, any photos out there?

I spotted one of Sydney’s new Waratah 8 car sets on the weekend being tested on the Sydney’s western line. The Waratah is a permanently fixed 8 car set, normally an 8 car train is made up of 2 x 4 car sets.

I happened to`have been on the Matangi twice yesterday, and I just loved it, all stations are called out and it is very warm and dry in the units. Plenty of room too for wheelchairs and parents with prams.

    :D
