Here We Go Again

 

Lyttelton Port of Christchurch has sustained further damage and KiwiRail has suspended all train services between Ashburton, Springfield and Waipara in the South Island because of today’s earthquakes in Christchurch.

KiwiRail chief executive Jim Quinn said all staff working in affected areas have been located and are safe.

He said the magnitude of the earthquakes was such that all tracks and structures supporting the lines need to be inspected before services can resume.

This afternoon the city was hit by a 5.5 aftershock 10km east of the the city  11km deep, soon followed by a 6.0 in the same location 9km deep and by numerous shakes around 3.

Initial inspections show that freight services could resume on the main lines north and south tomorrow, but it may take some days before freight services to Lyttleton resume.

Passengers on today’s Tranz Alpine have been transferred from the train at Rolleston and are going by bus to Christchurch.

Mr Quinn said tomorrow’s Tranz Alpine service has been replaced by buses.

Lyttelton Port of Christchurch has sustained further damage from today’s series of aftershocks in Christchurch.

There were no injuries sustained at the port.

The port is now completing a full engineering assessment over the next 12 hours. Receival and delivery of containers will commence 7am tomorrow.
