Some Trains Return

Trains return to the Western & Onehunga lines & Southern until Otahuhu in the morning (Monday) but the Summer Rail work continues on the entire Eastern and on the Southern lines beyond Otahuhu for another week.

So trains resume on Western, Onehunga and Southern up to Otahuhu. (more details further down the post)

The whole of the Eastern Line, and Southern Line south of Otahuhu, will remain closed until Monday 17 January.   All normal train timetables will resume Monday Jan 17.

Track lowering and maintenance work around the Purewa Tunnel is a key part of the Eastern line work.

The work replacing bridges on the Southern Line continues this week with services stopped beyond Otahuhu.

Timetable info and bus replacement details here

While the Eastern Line is closed until Jan 16 there is no rail bus service to Meadowbank Station because it is considered it delays the rail bus significantly.  The nearest public transport is the 655 bus service which is 5 minutes walk from the station.  Normal bus fare will apply, however monthly rail passes will be accepted.

There will be no stop at Baldwin Ave and no rail bus there from Monday.

I’m confused. Southern and Eastern closed entirely, or just south of Otahuhu? Maxx has timetables saying buses replace trains for on those lines for services south of Otahuhu.

  2. Andrew says:

The Onehunga Line resumes this week too, as do services between Otahuhu and Britomart via Newmarket.

  3. Jon C says:

Sorry post went live before it was finished!

  4. Alex says:

meanwhile there have been too many scheduled nz buses not turning up to be a coincidence - since they are providing the ‘rail bus’ service ……..

  5. Geoff says:

Trains also resume between Pukekohe and Papakura from today. Some limited movements also resume between Otahuhu and Papakura, on one track only.

  6. William M says:

Freight traffic resumed last night too, with a large freight run passing through Papakura last night ~12am.

  7. Luke says:

I wonder how long till reports come in of commuters angry with replacement bus services.
With an 1hr 20min scheduled from Papakura to CBD I think most commuters from the south will be back in their cars for the week.

Surely some rail buses should run express from Papakura/Manurewa to CBD?
This should give a far more reasonable journey time.

  8. urban local says:

The service on the western line was a shocker this morning running at least 30 minutes behind schedule towards Waitakere. PA communication at stations was not good as it stated only a 15 minute delay.

  9. GJA says:

I can’t wait for next week to get the train on the Eastern Line again, the afternoon traffic out of town is doing my head in.

Now I know why I take the train!!!

  10. Finn says:

I’ve noticed that freight trains are back running aswell, saw the daily North Auckland Line freight express come past about 40 minutes ago.
Its a bit surprising for me that freights are running again on the NIMT, ECMT, etc because I thought that the Sothern & Eastern LIne were closed from Otahuhu onwards.

  11. Lynda says:

Well I hope the freight has resumed and we can get some reprieve from the numerous trucks thundering past our place in Pukekohe!
