New Trend: Drunk Mum Drivers

Two mothers were apprehended by Western Bay of Plenty Police staff while driving drunk on Tauranga roads over the weekend.

The first woman, a 49 year old Papamoa local was caught driving on Devonport Rd at around midnight on Friday night.  Her breath alcohol level was recorded in excess on 1030 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.  Her ten year old son was a passenger in the car at the time.

The second woman, a 36 year old Mt Maunganui resident was caught at an alcohol checkpoint run by the Traffic Alcohol Group on the Harbour Bridge at around 10:20pm on Saturday night. Her breath alcohol level was recorded in excess of 560 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.  Her four year old daughter was in the car at the time.

Sergeant Roser of the Western Bay of Plenty Traffic Alcohol Group said that he was dismayed that a parent would put their child at such great risk and drive drunk.  Mr Roser said that there is no way a person could think they were alright to drive a car while that drunk.

A 21 year old local man was arrested by the staff of the Traffic Alcohol Group when he attempted to escape from the checkpoint at around 11:30pm on Saturday night.  A brief pursuit came to an abrupt end when the driver dumped the vehicle at the Dive Crescent off ramp and decamped on foot.  He was quickly caught by a Police dog unit.  His breath alcohol level was in excess of 670 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.  The man now faces charges of drunk driving, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and failing to stop for Police.

Sergeant Roser said that the risks posed by drunken idiotic drivers to other road users are real, significant and can occur at any time.  He urges all drivers to drive completely sober as any alcohol slows reactions which could be vital to avoid those people on the roads that make the conscious decision to drive drunk and are simply a crash looking for a place to happen.
