Grafton Station Getting Closer - Latest Photos

Grafton station, which replaces Boston Rd station, is only weeks away from opening.

It will be so good to end the craziness of a train stopping outside a prison. Overseas tourists always seem bewildered.

The project is not far off completion and the Easter rail shutdown will help workers be able to do that, rather than have to try and work around the busy active rail tracks, as they do now/

Here are some photos taken last night of the entrance from Khyber Pass, just beyond Boston St and on the other side of Park Rd. There are stairs and a lift but no escalators.

Firstly I go this site every day awesome to say the least. My question is does anyone have information on when Onehunga Rail Station be opened and operating.

    Thankyou

@Steve Welcome. We’d all love to know that. Last update was here http://www.aktnz.co.nz/2010/03/13/onehunga-monthly-update-dream-on/

Grafton is starting to look pretty good and its almost finished with is great. Does anyone know whats happening with the stairs, are they going to be left as concrete or are they going to be covered with tiles ?

Also I have noticed on the North Western end of the platform shelter there is a flashing red light that has been installed. Any idea what this is for?

When I went home last night I noticed that all of the rubbish and debris had been cleared from the site ready for the tracks to be laid.

Lastly welcome Steve and I agree Jon has done a great job with the site.

The change in this corridor has been huge and very positive… I’ll be interested to see if there is any new development in this area, if/when the brewery closes and is replaced it should increase patronage…

  5. Joshua says:

Jeremy - Same here, I think once the old brewery site is developed, this station has huge potential, It’s already going to be busy during school travel times due to st peters and grammar.

Also I have to third Steve and Matt on that, great job Jon.

I would strongly expect the stairs to be covered with tiles or other surfacing. But since they have only recently been concreted into place, I am not worried yet. Most don’t even have railings yet.

    “flashing red light”

Track warning signalling for the works period?

The brewery is closing down in stages right now, you already sometimes see crews dismantling stuff, and I hear their new site in Tamaki is almost ready to go.

However, I have heard (third-hand) that the plans for the future use of the site are progressing very slowly, and are not near the resource cnsent stage yet even. Likely due to the financial crisis (buyers must have kicked themselves for having paid the price of just before the crisis - too bad it is AMP, who hold my super fund ;-/ )

@steved @Matt L @joshua You are too kind. Glad you enjoy it and thanks for your ongoing great comment contributions (along with everyone else).

  8. Matt L says:

Max - The red light seems like more of a permanent fixture as it is on the shelter itself and also on the side of the platform without tracks. I haven’t actually seen it flashing yet.

  9. Jon C says:

@Max AMP paid $162m for the block which was suppose to see cafes, apartments, even a retirement village -and our favourite beast, a big carpark building. That was 3 years ago! Zoning changes are still weeks or a few months away, apparently.

  10. Andrew says:

I remember when they said that this section will remain single track as it was too hard to duplicate. This was in the early days of DART.

    Good thing that changed!

I know they paid a lot, and in the LONG run, this is a prime site. But as I said, the impetus to get anything moving soon has died with the GFC. They may be planning stuff, but don’t seem to much in a hurry.

I am also quite involved in Newmarket traffic planning, and I doubt they would get a car parking building, or the associated traffic flows consented. One at least hopes.

Opening day for Grafton station has now been announced for 9 April, celebration from 3 to 4pm. My resident’s association just got sent the invite from ARTA.

  13. Jon C says:

@Max You are 2 steps ahead of me! LOL
